“Photographer’s Eye: Mario G. Reyes — Shining a Light on Little Tokyo” will be presented on Wednesday, June 18, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in Meeting Room A at the Central Library, 630 W. 5th St., Los Angeles.
Gwen Muranaka will share images and memories of Reyes.
For more than four decades, Mario G. Reyes chronicled the important moments in the Japanese American community in Little Tokyo and the Southern California region as the photo editor of The Rafu Shimpo.Reyes passed away in January at 69, shortly after the Japanese American National Museum staged a retrospective of his work, “Obras de Luz.”
He was born in Mexico City, immigrated with his family to L.A. when he was four years old, and started working at The Rafuas a senior at Roosevelt High School. Reyes was a fixture in the Japanese American community for four decades at events such as Nisei Week, Obon festivals, and the Manzanar Pilgrimage, as well as covering youth sports and the Dodgers.
Muranaka, former Rafu Shimposenior editor, worked alongside Reyes for more than 20 years. She is a writer and cartoonist who has worked for publications in Los Angeles and Tokyo, and was recognized with the Distinguished Journalist Award by the Society of Professional Journalists, Greater Los Angeles Chapter in 2023.
